Shingle Roofing Delaware
Drive through any neighborhood across the United States and take a look at the roofs. There’s a good bet that the community will mostly be shingle roofs. Shingles are one of the most popular residential roofing systems in the continental U.S. And for good reason. They are affordable, quality, and tried and true. You can find shingles in several types:
Advantages of Shingle Roofing
Shingles have been used for over a century in America, showcasing the asphalt shingles durability and toughness. While there are always new innovations and roofing materials that enter the marketplace, shingles remain the most commonly used roofing system because it is a proven commodity. From color and style selection, there are numerous options to choose from. 10 houses on the same block can all have a unique look to their roof from different styles of shingles, to the color. However, just as important, shingle roof repair, replacement, and installation is relatively simple, which is important in that it allows for cost-effective repairs and when the time comes, easy replacement. For most homes, an entirely new shingle roof can be put on in as little as a day.
- Shingles are a great value
- Architectural shingles have a beautiful look to them
- Shingles perform well to wind damage
- Shingles are naturally fire resistant
Some shingles can help fight algae growth. Others can help offer resistance against damaging hail or wind. Some utilize cool roof technology to reflect heat (reducing a/c). You can inquire about these different types of shingles at your free inspection or roof estimate.
Shingle Roof Storm Damage
As we all know living in Delaware, our local weather can change on a dime. What goes from being a sunny day, can turn into a quick thunderstorm with gusting winds or even hail. With the fluctuating weather, it is important to routinely check for any potential storm damage to your roof. It is extremely important to make any repairs as soon as possible to prevent damage from worsening. Storms can damage not only your shingle roof, but also your siding, gutters and windows.
Think of a chain breaking. What starts as just a small repair, if left untouched, can lead to much costlier damages over time. If only one shingle is initially broken or lifted, it may not seem like a big deal. But by causing a ‘break’ in your roofing system, it can be a weak link allowing water to seep in under that shingle. And the more wind storms that come through, it can put all surrounding shingles at risk as well.
It is an advisable idea to have your shingle roof routinely inspected after any significant storm events, and our Delaware roofing contractors can help assist by providing a free roof inspection to identify severity of damage, and if any repair or maintenance is needed.
If your roof has suffered significant wind or hail damage, your homeowner’s insurance may cover it as an ‘Act of God’. Because storm damage to your roof can cause catastrophic roof failure, many insurance carriers will pay in order to have your roof repaired, or even fully replaced in order to prevent water damage from happening in your home or your roof damage worsening.
Types of Roof Shingles
There are a handful of different asphalt roofing shingles on the market. There are: strip shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles. All three vary from each other, not only in price, but in style and features
These are commonly referred to as 3-tab shingles because of the cut of the shingle, and these ‘strip shingles’ are the most basic asphalt shingles that you can purchase. They have a very flat appearance, and tend to be the most inexpensive option.
These are more commonly referred to as architectural or laminate shingles. These are one of the more prevalent asphalt shingles – they are fused between two or more layers of asphalt. Architectural shingles are designed to have a ‘random’ look to them, to try to replicate a slate roof or wood shake aesthetic appearance. These will generally have better roof warranties, however architectural is generally more expensive than a 3-tab shingle roof.
As the name suggests, luxury shingles are the highest-quality shingles available on the market. The luxury shingles outclass the two above shingles in both appearance and functionality. The luxury shingle is heavyweight which is ideal for weather/storm protection. They have a gorgeous aesthetic look to them with beautiful volume/dimensions and coloration. If you’re looking for a slate roofing or wood shake type of image, luxury shingles are your best option.
